What's on your bucket list? 

 I had the honor of speaking at a global financial conference called MDRT ( The Million Dollar Round Table https://www.mdrt.org/ ) with over 11,000 financial advisors from around the world attending their annual meeting and another 10,000 advisors attending their global meeting. I met advisors from all over the world. Learning from successful people from all corners of the planet was an incredible experience. Each person I spoke with had unique stories within their practice. Just listening to them, I could write another book. Learning where they were from, how they became successful in their country and what they did to get there was exhilarating. I tried to ask several people I met what was their big aha moment at the conference. Their comments will be the subject of a future blog post. For now, I want to share mine.

 

Big aha moment
One incredible speaker after another. As you can imagine there were some amazing speakers to listen to. But one speaker from Canada had a big impact on me. His name was Ben Nemtin. He talked about his bucket list. Not just any list but a crazy list. He asked one question. What do you want to do before you die? Check out The Buried Life https://theburiedlife.com/ The Buried Life, according to their website “are four regular guys on a mission to complete a list of '100 things to do before you die' and to help and encourage others to go after their own lists.” The question they asked that day had a profound impact on me.

What is important to you?

Ben’s message was to help people get their own list, and encourage them to do it. For everything on their list, they tried to help a stranger do something on their list. The stories were fascinating. https://theburiedlife.com/helped They have created a tv show a book and a movement. In their book, they said” We hope that the dreams and words filling these pages ignite part of you and halt you long enough to sincerely think about what is important. It’s easy to think about what others want for us but rarely do we truly listen to our gut and our heart, and that is where a bucket list should begin. If nothing in the world were impossible, what would you do? Even if it is impossible, what do you want to do before you die? “

What is on your list?

I help coach advisors to reach their goals. They, in turn, help their clients get clarity around their goals and help them reach their goals and dreams. But I truly believe that it goes beyond just goals. It is the giving back aspect that had the greatest impact. The list is about your goals and dreams and also about giving back and helping others. Instead of just goals, what if we helped clients create a list? You don’t have to call it a bucket list, call it your extended goal list, or giving back list, or someday list. So I ask you today to start writing out your list. Take 5 minutes today and start writing out what is possible? What organizations or people would you like to help? Once you have clarity around your list, then help others get their list together. As Ben says” One question unites us all... "What do you want to do before you die?"
